The casting for the Cyclinder was not made with any cores, so the steam passages must be machined. Prior to the machining here, a hole was drilled down through the valve chest into the cyclinder. This provides the steam passage from the valve chect to the cyclinder. The hole on the top portion of the valve chest will be plugged later and covered with the by the cyclinder wrapper.
