Driving Box Radius Machining 4
14-Feb-2006 - Yes my wife let me go out machining on
Valintines Day (now THAT's a sweetheart)
The Driving Box slots may be machined with a radius
to increase the lateral clearance. I choose to do this machining. We
don't have a rotary table large enough, so an extension was
constructed. The same angle plate fixtures used to machine the slots
will be used here as well.
Here the fixture is being put to use.
From Jeff Hook
"Using a radius instead of parallel vertical sliding
surfaces on the driving boxes is done in order to maintain within
closer tolerances a given lateral clearance between the frame and the
driving box regardless of the angular change that the axle makes in
relation to the frame due to the engine moving over rough track.
If Parallel surfaces are used on the driving boxes the lateral
clearance will be the greatest when the axle is 90 degrees to the frame
vertical surfaces and will diminish if the angle of the axle relative
to the frame changes in either direction from 90 degrees."
